It can never be to early to think about this.
Kotler advocates the "STP" approach to marketing.
S - Segment; What is the likely buying-preference of your customers
T - Target; How can you reach those customers showing this preference
P - Position; What is the "message" that you want your customers to associate with your product/service
If you can get this clear in your mind, you are on the way to attracting customers (and investment!) -
Yes I agree with Darran Foxon - just remember it will take a lot longer than you think - but keep going.
