I am a freelance workshop provider - how do I get insured?
If you run your own workshops on a freelance basis you will need to have Public Liability Insurance (PLI) in order to protect yourself and your participants. PLI covers you for legal expenses arising from any accident or injury that occurs in the course of your workshops. You should take steps to minimise risk, and many of these steps are common sense. It's a good idea to get into the habit of running a health check (see the Basic Risk Assessment Template) so that you are aware of areas where people are exposed to risks.
If you are a member of the Musicians' Union, your workshop may be automatically covered by Public Liability Insurance, up to a limit of £10 million. Contact the Musicians' Union to find out more. PLI is also available from independent insurance brokers. If you need advice on this and other insurances you can contact Sound Sense, the national development agency for participatory music (see below).
