Embedding Entrepreneurship in the University Curriculum

Embedding Entrepreneurship in the University Curriculum

We live in an age where entrepreneurship is not only trendy but of the moment and suddenly an acceptable life style or career choice for many. The media, coupled with the decline of traditional industries have combined to play a significant role in this attitudinal change towards a phenomenon that has existed and which has been central to our existence, our wealth accumulation and indeed our collective survival since time began.

With respect to Higher Education the attention given to entrepreneurship has been historically sporadic. The late and remarkable Jeffrey Timmons played a central role in the development of entrepreneurship in Higher Education in the 1950s and 1960s and in the intervening decades it has become increasingly important in the curricula of business schools. In the last ten years alone we have witnessed the increasing importance that is being attached to entrepreneurship in Universities in the UK. Indeed some universities have managed to integrate entrepreneurship successfully into core curricula outside of the faculties of business and management; such integration is notable in areas of engineering, science and technology.

For the most part however, institutions of Higher Education in the UK and Ireland have struggled to find a model which allows for the successful embedding of entrepreneurship into their core curricula. This link will allow you to see and hear a model which was developed successfully by Professor Jimmy Hill, Chair of Entrepreneurship in the Management School at the University of Liverpool. The model presented addresses the organisational, pedagogic and practical challenges associated with the successful roll-out of an entrepreneurial agenda in the University sector as well as outlining an approach to the embedding and integration of entrepreneurship and enterprise into the wider University curriculum.
