  1. There are many sources of differing forms of finance and what you look at depends largely on the type of business you are thinking to start and where.
Assuming that it is UK based, searching on grants and such will give you a lot of ideas try www.grantsnet.co.uk or grantsonline.org.uk to include the UK.
Loans can come from the obvious sources .. banks who will want a sound plan, good evidence of expected revenues and, in some cases, security.
Then there are friends and relatives....
Investment capital may be suitable for some projects; search venture capital, angels, private equity etc.. you can learn more about all of them here.
Do consider contacting your local Business Link who should be able to give you some useful assistance.
Undertaking our general assessment and possibly one of the other assessments if specific to your idea e.g. a university spin out or such will help a lot in sorting your ideas.
  2. If you are unemployed and between the age 18 - 30 yrs you could be be eligible for a loan from The Prince's Trust. Freepone: 0800842 842 for further information.
  3. I'm not being paid to say this..... try here:

There are a couple of pages of links to topics such as Government Funding - Where to Find It (http://www.venturenavigator.co.uk/content/126?s=true).

Without naming them directly, the latter does cover start-up schemes and the Business Link: both of which were extremely useful to me at the start-up phase.

  4. The info on Venture Navigator is excellent. I found the EMDA website and BusinessLink very helpful, in particular, the latter has a vast website with lots of free templates and other useful stuff. Unfortunately, I am not finding it so easy to obtain the funding, as you say, there are many, many hoops to jump through...
