tips for a freelance photographer - common mistakes in setting up?
I am planning to set up as a freelance photographer specialising in architecture and interiors. Its a competitive industry! anyone with experience of doing this? top tips on things to do or things to avoid?
If you commission photos, perhaps you can also give advice?

There are a number of VentureNavigaor users who share your interest who (like you) have added 'photography' tag (or similar) to their profile:

Hi
I think you should maybe start with researching your competition in the place you live & see how many other Interiors/Architecture photographers are working in your chosen location. Specialising in a certain subject is definitely the way to go. I guess I would say do a lot of networking and spend no money (apart from investing in a camera of course). Try and make contact with design and marketing agencies and show your portfolio, get to meet them in person. Definitely go for a printed portfolio as well and an online one, get a website up and running quickly and do some assisting with various photographers whom you admire, I still do and learn loads all the time. It is really competitive and its very hard work to get your foot on the ground. Don’t want to sound negative but you have to really really want to do it and be very aware of the business side of things. Join the association of photographers, they offer lots of advice (beyond the lens – lots of tips in there) and free seminars and other things like an assistant database, forum etc. hope that helps a bit.
There are a lot of things to look out for I guess. Good luck,
Claudia
