Can you protect a website design?

I'm planning a website with a unique presentation format for the genre in which it will compete.

Can it be protected? ie, design and function of the site, how it uses and displays information.

The info is freely available and it wont use any proprietary techniques or algorithms but it will be unique presentation style for the genre of website and great to protect if possible. (this style exists in other mediums and for other types of info online, just not for this type of info).

Thanks!

  1. The design of the site and its content would be covered by copyright automatically since you created it. (http://www.ipo.gov.uk/c-basicfacts.pdf (big file). More extensive forms of protection may be open to you but it very much depends on what you are doing. Have a look at www.ipo.gov.uk for advice.
