A few ideas for you:
1. Have a great website
2. Make sure the website is searchable by search engines such as Google. DO NOT USE FLASH under any circumsatnces, regardless of what people tell you! Making your website searchable is called Search Engine Optimization (SEO). Make sure that when somebody in the UK searches for things like 'paint in newcastle' (or wherever you are) your website is in the top hits.
3. Use PR work to drive people to your site and to have them link to the site. Links to the site will ensure that you continue to get traffic and will also help with your search ranking in Google.
4. Make it very easy for people to contact you via the site using email, telephone etc.
Having a website is the cheapest and fastest way to market you business. For a very simple way to do this, you can even use blogs as the basis of the website, for example have a look at this: http://toone.typepad.com/tooneguitars/instruments.html
