Selling advertising space.
Hey All,
I run a free revision service and currently have 200,000 subscribers who I email daily with revision notes. To keep them motivated I would like to have adverts in the emails as well as on the website, therefore selling advertising space to businesses.
As this service is free, I have very limited funds. Any ideas of how I can do this would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Elizabeth,
Have a think about what kind of businesses would be interested in your subscriber base. At a guess, I'd say the likes of entertainment and clothing retailers? Then you'd want to think about contacting their marketing/sales departments and seeing if they'd be interested in buying space on your site or within your daily e-mails. Businesses are a bit more cautious these days when it comes to web advertising, but 200,000 subscribers who can be reached every day sounds like a good selling point! -
Hi Elizabeth,
If you have 200,000 people of school leaver age, I'd certainly be interested in advertising :0)
Do you have some sort of landing page or homepage that your subscribers look at once they have recieved an e-mail? If so, you can set-up a Google AdSense account (type that in Google and follow the prompts) very easily which will automatically generate code for you to cut & paste into your website in order to display adverts relevent to your business. You can let Google choose or you can set specific paramaters. You can display banner ads, youtube videos, news tickers.... the options are endless. You will then be paid each time someone clicks on one of these banners.
If you don't, you can use the same AdSense codes in HTML e-mails (as opposed to text only). This would place specific adverts in or around the e-mail you send out and you could change this for each mailshot to experiment with different ads.
Aside from Google, you could do as Lee has suggested and arrange some sort of payment from existing companies in exchange for a banner/text on your mailshots. The disadvantage here is that you have to target businesses, come up with an agreement etc, where as Google AdSense is no more complicated than a few clicks. The advantage is that you may get someone to pay a fixed amount per month over a set period, which is much better for predicting revenues than Google Adsense.
I hope that helps.
