  1. Hi Abdul,

This type of query has come up a few times and there have been some good answers. Try these links first:

The thing for you to consider is which keywords do you want to be top for? This of course depends on what your site is about. Now your site is finished, doing some keyword research would be a good place to start. If there is a lot of competition for your chosen keywords, then it will take a lot more effort to get your site near the top of the first page.

  3. Hi Abdul,

The posts listed above go into this in some depth, however it is in essence determined by how well you use (1) pay per click advertising and (2) search engine optimisation. Google have some excellent how-to articles regarding both issues and they deserve a read if you intend to keep web marketing in house.

  4. We did all our own website optimisation at first, which took many, many hours of adding entries to free online directories. This worked initially, and we were on the first page with Google for some time, either in our own right, or through a directory. The drawback with this was unless we "tweaked" our site every week, Google dropped us further down, and we really didn't have the time to keep fiddling with it. Our business is not big enough yet to pay someone to do this, but it is a step on the Google rankings ladder for a small business if you have the time. Incidentally, about 75% our business comes from referrals from free online directories, in my book that alone makes it worth doing!

  6. Abdul,

Some general advice about optimising your site for search engines (it won't guarantee a particular position for particular keywords but it definitely helps):

    1) Make sure that any information contained within images is also available within the text content of the page e.g. via an alt attribute
    2) Include a meaningful title element
    3) Use structural markup for headings and paragraphs, lists, data tables etc. Search engines assign more importance to e.g. a level one heading than a level three heading
    4) Content is King - make sure it is relevant, up to date, and sufficient for the search engines to make a good assessment (200-300 words is good).
    5) Consider the use of location information if it is appropriate for your business. For example trying to get to the top of Google for the phrase "Taxi Service" would not only be extremely difficult but also pointless because a Manchester taxi service at the top of the results would be of no use to someone looking for a taxi service in London.
    6) Don't try and beat the search engines by nefarious means e.g.keyword stuffing, paid for links and other "black hat" techniques. You might get a good position for a while but will almost certainly be penalised, even BMW were knocked off Googles search results for a few days after trying to beat the system.
